Poker Tip 3: Getting to the WSOP for Free

Can't believe the 2009 WSOP starts on May 27 and runs through July 15--just 30 days away. Like many of you with a tight bankroll this year, my goal is to win a seat. So, I'll be posting updates about "win a WSOP seat" online tourneys as I find them.

Here's the complete schedule for the 2009 WSOP.

PokerStars just announced that they are starting qualifying tourneys this week for seats. And I see that Full Tilt has them too (sending 100 lucky players to the WSOP). My guess is just about every big online site will likely have qualifiers. Good luck to everyone in their quest for the Rio felt!

Poker Tip 2: Just the Two of Us

As I was watching the 2009 Heads Up Championships on NBC this morning, I was reminded how much I love playing heads up. If you want to catch it I believe it's on for at least the next few Sundays at Noon EST.

Many online sites (PokerStars is my current favorite) now have many heads-up tournaments and I recommend trying them for two reasons:

Reason 1: Obviously, before you can win a tournament obviously you'll have to best one last player. If you been in, or watched, enough heads up games I think you'll see that for me, this is where poker really becomes a sport.

If you play any other sport--tennis, golf, running, etc.--this is where you can transfer some of those skills like stamina to the felt. I think I've won a good percentage of my online heads up matches that "go long" simply because I did not give up, no matter how short stacked I was. Keep going all in, keep fighting. Put on your "Jedi" poker cap. On that day, be the player who wants to win more.

Reason 2: In today's match they asked Daniel Negreneau what his strategy was for playing a very aggressive, super bluffy player heads up. He was very clear about what his plan was (let the other player set the speed limit) and then set a bluff trap.

Daniel (if I may call you that Monsieur Negreneau) not only stuck to this strategy from what I could see, he perfectly set up the winning hand when he was dealt pocket KK and the other player bluffed at a rag tag flop.

Have a strong plan heads up and stick to it, even the other player varies their game. In time they will let their guard down especially if they get confident, and then you can make your move.

In the meantime Good Luck & See you at the tables!

Poker Tip 1: Watch Your Hands (your actual ones)

Am recently back from playing at the Mirage Poker Room, where I had a great time in their daily High Noon Tourney. If you haven't played much poker live, the next time you are in Las Vegas, the Mirage is relatively affordable (less than $100 for the High Noon), relaxed, and friendly.

Isn't it amazing, especially for those of us who only get to play live every month or so, how much you can learn in just one session even if you bust out fairly early? It was certainly true at the Mirage, where as usual I was the only gal at my table. (Just the way I like it.)

Now, I don't think I have a lot of tells (according to my poker pals), but I've discovered that playing live I tend to think with my hands--you know, tap the table (and I'm not checking), rub my finger, that type of thing. I think I must do while I'm working at my desk. And at the poker table it's a not only a bad habit, but also a possible tell. Don't move your hands unless you are checking, if you can help.

Keeping my hands quiet was also a good reminder to look at my cards just once and not again (unless of course you are trying to look weak). So if you are someone who normally gestures a lot or uses their hands expressively (you know who you are) be sure to watch yourself at the table. In fact while I was playing, a particular gesture-y East Coast gentleman at our table knocked his gin and tonic asunder.

That's it for today. May Lady Luck be with you next time at the tables.
