Poker Tip 2: Just the Two of Us

As I was watching the 2009 Heads Up Championships on NBC this morning, I was reminded how much I love playing heads up. If you want to catch it I believe it's on for at least the next few Sundays at Noon EST.

Many online sites (PokerStars is my current favorite) now have many heads-up tournaments and I recommend trying them for two reasons:

Reason 1: Obviously, before you can win a tournament obviously you'll have to best one last player. If you been in, or watched, enough heads up games I think you'll see that for me, this is where poker really becomes a sport.

If you play any other sport--tennis, golf, running, etc.--this is where you can transfer some of those skills like stamina to the felt. I think I've won a good percentage of my online heads up matches that "go long" simply because I did not give up, no matter how short stacked I was. Keep going all in, keep fighting. Put on your "Jedi" poker cap. On that day, be the player who wants to win more.

Reason 2: In today's match they asked Daniel Negreneau what his strategy was for playing a very aggressive, super bluffy player heads up. He was very clear about what his plan was (let the other player set the speed limit) and then set a bluff trap.

Daniel (if I may call you that Monsieur Negreneau) not only stuck to this strategy from what I could see, he perfectly set up the winning hand when he was dealt pocket KK and the other player bluffed at a rag tag flop.

Have a strong plan heads up and stick to it, even the other player varies their game. In time they will let their guard down especially if they get confident, and then you can make your move.

In the meantime Good Luck & See you at the tables!
